10. How do I screen a family?

Care4hire.com is an online database and does no pre-screening on the caregivers or families. Several steps should be taken in screening a family. You will want to ask a lot of questions to make sure you find the right match. You will also want to perform reference checks on the family, contacting past care providers. If the family has no past care providers, you may want to speak with a family friend who knows the family well. Background checks can be obtained using the online investigation service. Once you are a register member, you will have access to our sample interview questions, a sample contract and sample reference check forms. Your instincts are the best tool for choosing a family. A caregiver position can be a great experience, but be aware of illegitimate families. There have been recent scams where a family will request your bank account information and routing number. Do not give this information out to families. In rare cases, they will offer to send you a certified cashier’s check for travel expenses (which turns out to be a forgery). It will usually arrive in a much larger sum than what was agreed upon and they will ask you to transfer or wire the money to a third party. The job will usually sound too good to be true. If you feel you have been contacted by a scamming family, please contact Care4hire.com immediately. You can also report this type of situation to http://www.ic3.gov/ or http://www.treas.gov/usss/financial_crimes.shtml.
